The ceremony was presented by the director of the Islamic Cultural Centre Sayyed Shafiq Al-Moussawi.

In closing, the scholar Sayyed Ali Fadlallah delivered a speech in which he said: We come today to bear witness to your presence in the bleeding wound in Gaza, in the West Bank and in Palestine - in this cause which took much from you and to which you gave much. You were aware of the danger of accepting the occupation of Palestine, of legitimizing it and of expelling its people, and you saw the cause of Palestine as the question of whether the nation is to be or not to be, and that Palestine sums up all the nation's pains and dreams.

He added: You were aware of the link between the occupation of Palestine and the colonial project intended to dominate the region and to prevent its unity and its possession of the elements of strength. But you trusted the Palestinian people - their capacities, their patience, their readiness to sacrifice and their determination to face this enemy and prevent it from settling anywhere it reaches.

He continued: Another of your nation's causes you lived and lived for, and to which we bear witness today - as do all those concerned - is the path of Islamic unity in which you believed. In it you were not flattering the other who differed from you in denomination, nor seeking to please them for some gain for a school of thought or to penetrate an arena; rather you believed in it and saw it as a religion by which you worshipped God…

He said: You saw division as the sharpest weapon this nation's enemies resorted to. Sadly they found fertile ground among us, which scattered our strength, dispersed our efforts and placed us on the margins of the nations instead of at their head with a full presence among them.

And so you called on them - schools of thought, currents and states - to unite, without giving up their schools, their interpretations, their loyalties or their homelands, but by working together on what they share, which is much. When you called for it you did not want it set against the religious other or against other currents; that is not what you wanted.

You raised the banner: O Muslims, unite. You were aware of the strength that is gained if Muslims and Arabs unite - states, peoples, schools and sects - and remove the anxieties that buffet them and make them fear one another. So you called on them to listen to one another, to approach their differences and the crises that buffet them in a unifying way, and to stand together on existential causes…

He continued: Another cause you lived with your whole being was when you presented religion in its breadth, its radiance and its authenticity, and were careful to purify it of every impurity and of anything that detracts from its humanity. For this you called for taking hold of religion's spirit and essence, which is shown in spiritual, ethical and human values and in the call to justice, which is the byword for the meeting between the heavenly religions - and for not being content with ritual alone and with a focus on form over substance. You held that there is no value in prayer, fasting or pilgrimage if it does not lead to strengthening truthfulness, trustworthiness, keeping one's word, order, justice among people, freedom, and the dissolving of rancour and conflict.

As for the homeland, which you loved for the diversity that distinguishes it, you worked so that this diversity would be a blessing and not a problem, and a message offered to the world affirming the capacity of religions not only to coexist with one another, but to complement, support, cooperate and live in harmony with one another…

He went on: How it pained you to see religion drawn into a game of interests and turned into a position for advancement and a door to quarrelling over shares - something that has no connection with the religions at all. This is what led you to give a person their right for their humanity, apart from their sect or denomination. This is what the messengers worked for: they did not demand rights for those with them, but the rights of the human being, every human being. You feared for Lebanon lest it become an arena of struggle and quarrelling between the sects, turning it into a field exploited by those who wish to belong on that basis…

He added: You were aware of the danger of the Zionist entity and you feared for Lebanon because of it. So you raised the banner of calling for wariness of this enemy and for building every element of strength and readiness able to face its aggression and its ambitions. And so you rejected the saying that Lebanon's strength lies in its weakness and that the eye cannot resist the awl, and you called for arming the Lebanese army to carry out its national duty - but sadly it was not allowed to possess the weapons that would qualify it to face this enemy.

You were a support and an inspiration to the resistance from its launch, not in its sectarian dimension, but because its strength is a strength for all Lebanon and to its account. You saw it as Lebanon's popular army, which should not be a rival to the Lebanese army or a cause of its weakening, but should carry out its duty alongside it where it is needed. You embraced it and cared for it, and gave the distillation of your thought to strengthen it in the nation's conscience and to stake on it as a principal means of liberating the land and protecting the homeland. You took upon your chest many of the stabs that cast doubt on it, and were the shield that protected it and the thundering, wise voice against those who wanted to distort its image - those who did not grasp its role, its premises, its aims and what it seeks, and its fulfilment of its human duty in supporting the Palestinian people…

And here the resistance stands today with all firmness and strength and despite every threat, so that the Zionist enemy now weighs it a thousand times before carrying out its threats of a full-scale war on this homeland - which calls on the Lebanese to take pride in it and not to squander it, being a support and an embrace for this homeland alongside its army.

Alongside this, you worked with all your strength to provide the conditions for building a just, strong state that guarantees its citizens a dignified life and equality among its people and secures the country's independence - a state free of corruption and of dependence on the outside, and of the meddling of those who tamper with it…

Today we raise our voice in your name, my master, to call for what you called for: for unity and joint work to build this homeland, which will not be built, stand and flourish except with all its sons, its sects, its denominations and its political positions, with no one excluded. He concluded: Our pledge to you is that we will be faithful to everything you worked for and will not squander it - by working to strengthen internal unity and keeping our hands extended to the other, every other, being enemies only to those who are enemies of this homeland; by being pioneers in the communication and dialogue you worked for and set out; by being careful of this country's security, sovereignty and independence; and by being a support to all the wronged in this world against those who want this world to be a milk cow for themselves

<figure class="wp-block-gallery
