Al-Mabarrat's schools - Al-Rahma High School - opened the virtual cultural week, held virtually because of the coronavirus pandemic, under the title \u201cAnd in Reading There Is Hope\u201d, with the participation of educational, cultural, social and religious figures, alongside the teaching and administrative body and the students' families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ceremony began with verses from the Holy Quran, then the national anthem, then a video containing Al-Rahma High School's memories of the book fairs over previous years, followed by a video containing testimonies from the school's graduates, who spoke of the importance of reading and its effects on their professional lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Director General of Al-Mabarrat <\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Director General of Al-Mabarrat Dr. Mohammad Baqer Fadlallah hoped in his speech that \u201cthis exceptional gathering this year, from behind a screen, would turn the stagnation we live because of the coronavirus pandemic into movement and life, into vitality and renewal, so that we become more productive and more giving - and that reading remain a pleasure however the circumstances change, dipping the reader's spirit into the beauty of the word, the genius of the idea and the wonder of creation\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added: \u201cToday we are with Al-Rahma High School, which shines every year in reading week and which has continued to mark it for sixteen years with book fairs every year, with long-established Lebanese publishing houses present. What is striking is the attendance of thousands of visitors - parents, the local community, writers, poets and cultural activists. Today, after the coronavirus pandemic, the cultural corner has been created on the electronic platform, and we aspire for this corner to expand so as to become a digital library that meets the requirements of the age and the pupils' needs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fadlallah stressed \u201cthe importance of developing our children's minds with knowledge and widening their perceptions, especially amid the enormous amount of terror, prevention, caution and wariness during the coronavirus pandemic\u201d, holding \u201cthat reading is the way to help them overcome all this fear - and most importantly to stir the imagination that provokes innovation and creativity, and to urge them to respond to their scientific curiosity and to deepen their faith by reflecting on the creation of the heavens and the earth\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added: \u201cIt was not by chance that the libraries in Al-Mabarrat's schools and institutes were given all this support and encouragement and were brought to the forefront.. in order to supply them with all the knowledge resources that meet the beneficiaries' needs. The libraries in Al-Mabarrat's schools are considered the door through which everything we believe in of educational and teaching policies is realized: from their shelves a pupil learns the correct mechanisms of research and how to obtain useful information, and trains in knowing their reading inclinations and developing their aesthetic taste.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The director of Al-Rahma High School Soulaf Hashem pointed out in her speech that \u201cthe crises were not a barrier to our development this year; rather they were a new experience that allowed pupils' technological skills to be improved. And with the enormous storm in the digital field and the weakening of the book's role, it was necessary to strengthen electronic culture - and so our interactive activities on the sidelines of the fair varied so as to reach all the teaching stages\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added: \u201cAfter Al-Mabarrat created the electronic platform devoted to free reading and guided reading, we completed the Al-Rahma Reads project and placed the digital resources within the pupils' reach to serve them and meet their reading needs. We have never compromised on the students' interest, and we strive with all our means to offer everything that develops them and makes of them thinkers, researchers and scholars.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He concluded, saying: \u201cAmong the effects of the coronavirus pandemic crisis is the restoration of the book's glory and its flourishing, as many publishing houses and distributors testify - which confirms to us that the book is not only the friend that never abandons you, but indeed the one that makes friends for you, because it gives the mind more flexibility, abundance and productivity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It should be noted that the cultural week continues until 13 April and includes many interactive virtual activities, among them a meeting with storytellers to draw out lessons and look at some problems, meetings with writers who recount chapters of their experiences, direct meetings with cultural facilitators to benefit from their expertise, discussion circles and novel criticism, and other activities that strengthen reading among the students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
