The Centre for Research on Strengthening Cyber Protection in Lebanon (CERT), in cooperation with the University of Sciences and Arts in Lebanon, published its first analytical study on electronic attacks in Lebanon's cyberspace. This study aims to reveal the scale of the breaches to which information systems in the various Lebanese sectors are continuously subjected, as well as the sources of these breaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The study collected and analysed breach data for a sample of 10 services widespread across many digital information systems in Lebanon. It used the technique of honeypots, which are programmes through which network intruders, or those attempting to intrude, are trapped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The study revealed that these electronic information services were subjected to more than two million five hundred thousand breach attempts during the last three weeks of January 2022 - that is between 10-01-2022 and 30-01-2022 - which threatens the loss of the data of the systems using these services if they are not updated and protected in cyber terms. The study also showed that some intruders in their attacks resort to exploiting the security vulnerabilities present in the information services used, while others try to exploit the weakness of account passwords during the breach attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The conclusion of this study is to show the striking increase in offensive security activity in Lebanese cyberspace. The owners of systems and applications within the Lebanese digital domain should make use of the results of the analysis to improve their security plans so as to ensure the continued operation of their systems, to limit the opening of ports, and to monitor unwanted traffic reported by their own cyber monitoring systems, in addition to building a strong mechanism for identifying users and authenticating their access and all their activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The studies the centre conducts, in line with its mission and its goals, aim to raise the voice high so that attention is paid to the gravity of the digital security reality in Lebanon, and are a direct call to all those concerned in the governmental and private sectors to communicate and work together with these efforts being made towards building an integrated cyber security protection system at the national level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
