The ceremony also featured the screening of excerpts from the words of the Marja Fadlallah (may God be pleased with him), and was presented by the director of the Islamic Cultural Centre Sayyed Shafiq Al-Moussawi.
In closing, Allama Sayyed Ali Fadlallah delivered a speech in which he said: At the outset I would like to welcome you, esteemed guests and dear brothers and sisters, and to express my thanks for taking part with us on this day, which we never wanted to be a day for renewing grief over one whose parting deserves to be grieved. For all of us it is a day of renewing fidelity to the Sayyed (may God be pleased with him), who was faithful to us and was never sparing towards us throughout the period we lived with him - neither of his time, nor his effort, nor his presence - and who kept giving from his mind, his heart and his guidance until the last breath.
He added: The Sayyed (may God be pleased with him) wanted people, when they commit to religion, to take it from its pure springs, its spirituality and its humane and moral values and principles; not for it to become for them a form without substance and a body without a soul; and for religions not to turn for them into hard concrete barriers and walls that prevent them from meeting, or into ramparts in whose name they fight one another…
This is what we witnessed in its clear and manifest effects at the level of his civilizational understanding of religion and at the level of thought, jurisprudence, exegesis, education, humane culture and serving and helping people. He had his role in addressing the issues relating to children, women, young people, the elderly and people with special needs, and his influential presence in the fields of struggle and in confronting occupation, arrogance and the forces of injustice, ignorance, backwardness and extremism…
He did not think, as many did, of building a personal glory shared with no one; rather he worked along two lines. The first line is participation: the Sayyed (may God be pleased with him) did not work in an individual way but was keen to involve those who possess competence, experience and capacity, and his partnership with them was real and not formal - in it no person, however high their position, was to be alone in taking the decision while the others merely carried it out…
The second line he worked on was awakening the energies and capacities deposited within every human being and within society and the nation, until he deserved to be described as the mover of stillness…
He worked to awaken thought when he used to say: Do not freeze your minds for the sake of anyone, however high their standing, and do not rent them out. This is something God did not accept even for Himself when He called His servants to rouse their minds and to believe in Him and in His messages on the basis of awareness and study, not on the basis of blind imitation…
He always used to repeat that the messenger is a mind from without and the mind is a messenger from within. Even in his relationship with the people who follow his approach and were raised on his teachings, he used to urge them to think, saying to them: Think with me and even criticize me, and do not say the Sayyed has spoken and that is the end of it… I want each of you to think, even within the limits of the capacities you possess…
This is what he worked for at the level of jurisprudence: he was glad and at ease with his students who used to debate with him in his jurisprudence lesson and raise question marks about his opinions - he saw them as the best of students, and that would lead him to change or adjust his opinion if he was convinced by their viewpoint and saw that it was correct.
He did not accept jurisprudential and intellectual stagnation and did not surrender to the prevailing and the well-known, nor even to a consensus of opinions. He used to say to those scholars who accused him of contradicting the great ones or the well-known view: We respect and revere them, but they have their minds and we have ours, which we must use and not freeze. And this is what he used to call for at the level of the individual… He wanted a person not to freeze at what they had reached, but to develop the energies they possess, because stagnation is retreat and contraction - indeed it is death and extinction…
He continued: He never stopped calling for the renouncing of disputes between the Arab and Islamic states, and it pained him that they should turn into flashpoints liable to ignite in this arena or that, or at the level of bilateral relations, without work to contain them swiftly through frank and transparent dialogue that eases the tension and helps in understanding mutual anxieties - many of which fall within the circle of illusions stirred by the foreign powers that seek to keep the conflict among them alive, and through which they entrench their influence in the region.
He said: In this stage, which is among the most difficult stages this homeland has passed through, we are in the greatest need of calling to mind the Sayyed's words, his stances and his choices, in order to emerge from the state of collapse we have reached at every level, and in order to strengthen the encounter among the Lebanese - an encounter that we do not want, as often happens, to be subject to flattery, formalities and even mutual deception, but rather a sincere encounter that helps remove the anxieties the Lebanese feel towards one another, which grow day by day; and in order to treat the intractable crises produced by the policies of waste, corruption and mismanagement, which have led the Lebanese to feel that they have become unable to live together, or have driven them to emigrate by any means in search of a livelihood and a dignified life in other countries…
Working for this encounter is the responsibility of all the political forces and parties, the religious authorities and the active and influential figures. It has become urgent in this stage to work seriously and to adopt every means leading to bringing the Lebanese out of this great impasse they have reached, whether at the political, economic, social, health or even security level, which concerns the future of this homeland - without waiting for the outside world to save us, for we have fallen outside its concerns, and if it does act it will be on its terms and for its own account. Here we must not tire of searching for and agreeing on any way out or rescue solution based on reform, whether at the level of the sectarian system or at the level of the mechanisms and style of governance adopted - and let no sacred thing or red line stand in the way of that.
We are called to build a homeland in which a person feels their humanity, in which justice has its rule, the judiciary its integrity and purity, and the law its authority; and in which the standard of competence is knowledge, experience and uprightness, through which a person reaches their position, without any person being favoured over another.
For our part, we will work together - and I stress working together - to pursue what the Sayyed (may God be pleased with him) began at the level of building a homeland strong in its means and its energies, holding fast to every inch of its land and its sea, able through the strength of its army, its living forces and its resistance to face the Zionist enemy's blackmail and threats, and open to its surroundings and to the Arab and Islamic world - which in turn has a responsibility not to leave Lebanon in its harsh circumstances floundering in its crises without offering it every means of support for its rescue.
In this context we look, as the Sayyed used to look, to an Arab and Islamic world strong in its capacities and its means and keen on complementarity among its states, and to building a better world in which a person lives their humanity, their dignity, justice and moral values.
He concluded, saying: We will continue to walk by the guidance of your steps (may God be pleased with you) and will not deviate from them, adopting the language of encounter in place of distance and estrangement, and the language of dialogue in place of the language of rupture. All our places, wherever we may be, will remain places of encounter and unity, as he used to repeat… The house is open, the mind is open and the heart is open.
This is what we learned from him… to extend the bridges of dialogue in cooperation with those with whom we live in this homeland and in other homelands, and to work together to preserve these institutions despite the difficult circumstances they face, so that we may remain in the service of the human being - and, as the Sayyed (may God be pleased with him) wanted, every human being, far from any calculations…

<figure
