The University of Sciences and Arts in Lebanon (USAL) celebrated the graduation of the 2022 class of its students at the Al-Saha heritage village, under the patronage and in the presence of the Minister of Education and Higher Education Judge Abbas Al-Halabi, alongside the president of Al-Mabarrat Charitable Association Allama Sayyed Ali Fadlallah, the chairman of the university's board of trustees and Director General of Al-Mabarrat Association Dr. Mohammad Baqer Fadlallah, the Minister of Labour Mustafa Bayram, the Minister of Works Dr. Ali Hamieh, the adviser to the president of the republic for Islamic-Christian relations Naji Khoury, MP Fadi Alameh, the director of the Educational Centre for Research and Development Hiyam Ishaq, the head of the Ghobeiry municipality Maan Al-Khalil, the head of the Burj Al-Barajneh municipality Atef Mansour, representatives of universities and of educational, social, media and economic institutions, members of the university's board of trustees, directors from Al-Mabarrat's institutions, the university's lecturers and its administrative body, and a gathering of the students' families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ceremony opened with the entry of the graduates' procession, then the entry of the teaching body's procession, then the procession of the university council. After listening to the Lebanese national anthem the university's anthem was launched, then Ms. Randala Jabbour presented the ceremony, saying: \u201cIt is a moment which, for all its swiftness, sums up a life - it sums up a spirituality of giving without equal, practised by families who were keen to educate their daughters and sons; practised by administrators who made the university environment fit to embrace young ambitions and nourish them; practised by saintly educators who offered what was in their store to the students' mental, intellectual, theoretical and professional pockets; and practised by learners filled with dreams, who cut the road of the dream from the University of Sciences and Arts in Lebanon, born from the womb of the mother institution, Al-Mabarrat Charitable Association, which this year as every year gave Lebanon high achievers in both official certificates, the intermediate and the secondary - an institution rising from the shore of righteousness to the expanses of giving in all its forms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After that came the speech of the university's president Dr. Mohammad Reda Fadlallah, in which he said: \u201cThe university has since its launch adopted the choice of distinction, and its great goal is to provide quality academic teaching in its various fields of specialization. It has given a wide space of its effort to producing academic scientific research and publishing it in leading scientific journals locally and internationally, and it has held scientific conferences, the latest being the conference on educating and caring for the gifted, in which more than 120 researchers from various Arab and foreign countries took part - in addition to its founding of the Centre for Research on Strengthening Cyber Protection, which revealed hundreds of security vulnerabilities in information systems in Lebanon and millions of cyber attacks to which the country is subjected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added: \u201cProceeding from the quality system it adopts, the university has affirmed what fortifies the administrative and academic structures - from retaining the teaching and administrative cadres distinguished by their competence, to focusing on an attractive student environment that stirs vitality, moves stillness and develops the student's character.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pointed out that \u201cthe university founded the student support fund to help expatriate students financially, granted financial and social assistance to needy and high-achieving students, and covered the full fees of orphaned students\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that \u201camid the present crises we relied as far as possible on in-person teaching while making use of the experience of virtual teaching during the previous period, and what gladdened our hearts is that most of the graduates have entered the labour market\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then came the speech of the university's teaching body, delivered by Dr. Hawraa Houmani, in which she said: \u201cWe, the lecturers of the University of Sciences and Arts in Lebanon, take pride in the harvest of the students' sowing, which has borne fruit in a teaching edifice that places the student's interest above every consideration. As teachers we rejoice in the graduates' achievements amid the scale of difficulty and anxiety our homeland is living through, and as life coaches we hope that every lock in the graduates may be opened so that the horizons widen for their talents and the skills they have acquired.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She called on the graduates to \u201cturn towards postgraduate studies with the same passion, whatever the specialization, so that we may change from a people searching for daily sufficiency or aspiring to emigrate into a nation of researchers in every field, and so raise Lebanon to where this homeland deserves from us\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The graduates' speech was delivered by the graduate Samira Awad, who said: \u201cFortunately I completed my stages of study within the educational institutions of Al-Mabarrat Charitable Association from the primary stage to the secondary stage, then moved to the university stage where I was once again within the association's institutions, at the University of Sciences and Arts in Lebanon. Today I am employed at one of the institutions in which the university helped secure a job for me within the computer science specialization, and I have been able to bring out my competitive scientific and technical skills at that institution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the screening of a documentary about the university, the ceremony's patron Minister Al-Halabi delivered a speech in which he said: \u201cI did not hesitate for a moment in agreeing to patronize the graduation ceremony of the students of the University of Sciences and Arts in Lebanon, because my participation in this ceremony in particular has a special meaning tied to the dimension it carries from the experience of Al-Mabarrat Charitable Association, which acquired its name, its role and its position from the principles and ethics of His Eminence Sayyed Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah, may God have mercy on him. This university is among the products of his efforts - he, the Allama open to dialogue and communication, the Marja by whose ideas students of knowledge are guided, ever renewing in the teachings of Islam, enlightened in his thought and bold in his propositions, and in educational thought as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pointed out that \u201cresting on Al-Mabarrat Charitable Association's educational experience widens the space of giving for your university; but it develops through future projects, local and international teaching partnerships, research institutes and specialized study centres. What is therefore required of the university is to answer the questions of the future amid the crises the country and its institutions suffer, among them higher education\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added: \u201cSince I took up my ministerial responsibility I have been treating the many accumulations that have affected higher education. We received a file full of gaps and marred by many violations, foremost among them the failure to abide by academic standards and by quality. We therefore worked on re-evaluating the situation of the universities with the aim of preserving the sector's distinction and its leading position. We re-formed the Higher Education Council with its technical committees so that it could keep track of the situation of the private universities, control violations and apply the higher education law with accountability, disclosure and the restoration of practices based on standards and quality. We brought the matter of licensing under control so as to push universities to develop their curricula and link them to the labour market. In the academic field we focused on structuring higher education in cooperation with the legislative authority in order to pass the quality assurance project, in addition to projects that contribute to the stability of this sector and to setting its work and its development on the right course.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that \u201cmy first concern is launching the appropriate mechanisms to put the sector's affairs in order. We activated the work of the Directorate General of Higher Education by appointing a new director general, so that it could carry out its role and exercise its duties. We worked on removing the obstacles and set a strategy for higher education, and we are completing its structure step by step. The council with its technical committees has begun to recover its role: it approved the final form of the draft decree regulating the licensing of master's programmes at private universities, refused the licensing of any new higher education institution in the light of the current state of this education, and also recommended that no request relating to creating a specialization or a certificate in a licensed specialization be referred to the academic technical committee unless the request includes a documented scientific feasibility study. In this way we have laid the foundations and the building blocks that restore to higher education its leading position and its capacity to compete.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said: \u201cBefore us is a challenge no less important than the others - the financial challenge. Instability in teaching leads to the emergence of many negatives, and these stand as a stumbling block before meeting the requirements of the higher education sector and following up its files. Our vision for education therefore aims at lifting the sector up on a clear basis, at securing its requirements with immediate and long-term plans, and at drawing Lebanon's educational future. Alongside academic quality, our aim is also that universities develop the curricula, digital transformation and the use of technology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He addressed the graduates at the close of his speech, saying: \u201cYou graduates are able to make the Lebanon of tomorrow, to restore the institutions and to entrench the concept of the state. What matters is that you do not become beholden to anyone and that you work for a real change in Lebanon's future. I say to our children graduating in this class: the certificates you will carry are a bridge to life, to work, to wider knowledge and to serving the homeland. The wager is always on you to trust your homeland and to work for it; do not disown Lebanon but root it in your hearts, be in its service if it needs you, and make the Lebanon of tomorrow. Carry the late Allama's ideas with more giving and perseverance. I am confident that your university is in faithful hands, as the Sayyed wanted it to be and founded it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the close of the ceremony, and after the commemorative photograph of the Minister of Education with the teaching body, the graduates ascended the stage and received their certificates from the university's president, the chairman of the board of trustees and the members of the university council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
