The University of Sciences and Arts in Lebanon (USAL) held guidance sessions on “cyber security” aimed at more than two thousand students in 25 schools and secondary schools from various Lebanese regions.
These sessions were delivered by third-year students of the university's computer science department, and were marked by wide engagement from students and teachers seeking to learn more about the scientific methods of protection against attacks.
The seminar aimed to introduce the world of cyber security and its basic terms, which help students understand news about cyber security, along with the methods hackers use against devices, smartphones and institutions' systems, and the consequences that follow, as well as explaining ways of protecting accounts from being hacked.
Cyber security is defined as a field of information technology in which individuals, institutions and systems are protected from digital breaches or unauthorized access to digital information systems - which may be followed by the theft or damage of the data on those systems, or may result in economic losses, the theft of money, cases of blackmail, violations of privacy and so on, now that technology has become closely bound up with every field of life.
The head of the computer department Dr. Yasser Fadlallah says: “The field of cyber security is bound up with the appearance of what are known as dangerous digital attacks or resistant viruses, in which the digital systems of individuals or facilities are attacked and the sensitive data they hold is seized and subjected to blackmail, theft and the deliberate destruction of information.”
He adds: “Because of the severe losses these attacks cause, the field of cyber security appeared - not only to defend or protect against harmful computer attacks, but also to carry out deliberate attacks in which the gaps in a system are discovered and work is done to repair them as soon as they are found.”
