A team from the media department at the University of Sciences and Arts in Lebanon took part in the “National University Debating Championship 2024”, organized by the “Smart Debate Centre” in cooperation with the “Qatar Debate Centre”.
The championship initially brought together more than 24 teams from around 15 universities in Lebanon. These teams competed in preliminary rounds, from which 16 teams qualified for the following rounds.
On 27 January, each of the 16 teams took part in three rounds, after which the result of the national championship was announced: the Lebanese University team took first place and the University of Sciences and Arts in Lebanon (USAL) took second.
Success in the national championship qualified the teams placed first and second to represent Lebanon's universities at the seventh International University Debating Championship in Arabic in Qatar, in the fourth week of May 2024.
It is worth noting that the university debating championship is an event bringing together students from across the world in Doha, to debate in Arabic the most important social and global problems and contemporary issues. The championship allows debaters from around the world to get to know one another, exchange expertise and build bridges of communication, as well as raising the standing of the Arabic language as a distinctive medium of civilization.
This year the championship is expected to attract more than 600 participants from more than 50 countries, between debaters and judges. Over five days the teams will experience an atmosphere of enthusiastic competition, in which varied and contemporary topics of concern to Arab youth will be discussed, including social justice, economic development and environmental sustainability.
